Message Smaller diameter piping increases velocity (air speed) but reduces flow volume. Larger diameter piping decreases velocity but increases flow volume.

Faster velocity spools turbos sooner. Larger volume allows the turbine wheel to spin at a higher speed. For example, faster velocity may allow it to spool to 100,000RPM in 1 second, but it won't spin any faster than that. Larger volume will allow it to spool to 100,000RPM in 2 seconds, but at 4 seconds it will be at 200,000RPM. These are all exaggerated numbers but that's the concept.

So small diameter piping allows the turbo to spool up sooner, while larger piping allows it to spool up to a faster RPM
